The story behind the name....

It all started in 1962 when the family purchased a new 41' Hatteras. This by no means our first boat, but it was the beginning of a new era of fiberglass boats. We felt like we were in the big leagues now and being in the cabinet business and knowing woodworking, it didn't take long before the configuration changed to accommodate tackle storage and our style of living. A teak cockpit deck was added along with a tuna door in the transom which we did all the work ourselves. We also installed a Rockaway fighting chair which was extremely strong and exactly what we needed for giant tuna fishing.

By the mid 60's after seeing much prettier chairs by Rybovich Boat Works we decided this is what we should have on our 'Custom Hatteras'. Taking the strong features we liked about the Rockaway chair and adding some of our own designs, we build our own teak fighting chair. Shortly there after the sport fishing industry began to grow and knowing the reputation of Ed's accomplishments as a big game fisherman, particularly with giant tuna, people began asking us to build a chair for them. That along with the quality woodworking we did essentially became the beginning of Murray Brothers Fighting Chairs.

After fishing out of Montauk N.Y. for many years, we decided after the swordfish run in late May early June that we would move up to Gloucester, MA. for the rest of the season. There was a larger concentration of bigger tuna in this area and we wanted to be a part of it. Even though Gloucester is a large commercial fishing port, we were unable to purchase the tackle we needed for giant tuna fishing. So the following year we rented a small space from the marina where we were staying and opened a small tackle store. We had all the equipment a fisherman needed and I guess you could say this was the beginning of the Murray Brothers retail tackle business and the rest as they say, is history!

In 1990 Ed retired and we sold the retail tackle business along with the name Murray Brothers. That same year, our family which kept the chair manufacturing division changed the name to Murray Products. Continuing to manufacture quality products as always, the company is still run by the next generation of Murray Brothers, Vincent and Michael along with their sister Lynn.

Unfortunately the company that bought the retail store in 1990 has closed its doors and has sold the name 'Murray Brothers' to another company. Our family would like it to be known that there is no affiliation between the Murray family and this new 'Murray Brothers' company.

Prior to Ed's passing in April 2003, he had just finished a biography of his fishing accomplishments. Along with some rare extraordinary photos, I believe everyone will find his story very interesting. No one has caught as many giant tuna as Ed and hid family. Numbers are in the thousands including dozens of giants over the thousand pound mark. Ed's sons Cookie and Paul continue to be known with the best in the sport fishing world. They play a big part in helping design and test our products for safety and reliability. There is nothing we have manufactured that we have not tested ourselves before selling it to the public. Safety has always been our first concern and we have produced products that are designed and built not by theory but through experience.

Thank you too all our customers and friends who have supported and continue to support Murray Products over the years. We appreciate your love for the sport and we promise to continue to give you only the finest quality and customer service available.

Good Fishing,

Frank Murray
