Tips When Shopping For A Fighting Chair

It is amazing how the consumer can fall for the 're-invention of the wheel' technique used by many salesmen. But it happens. Even in the Marine Industry with the right marketing approach you can sell anything to anyone. That is why you need to do your homework when you are in the market for a new Fighting Chair. Now everyone has there own ideas, but just as an example, there is a chair manufacturer who thinks that screwing 42 wood screws in the bottom of a teak chair seat would be the correct way to mount your hardware? Even the very first Murray Brothers Chair (1956) did not use hardware that was fastened with Wood Screws! Why would anyone want to expose 42 holes to the marine elements? Even if they were bedded correctly eventually salt water will find them. It sounds like a future problem to us and lets hope it doesn't happen when you are fighting a potential tournament winning fish.

Tip #1: 'Thru-Bolted Hardware'

If you are considering the purchase of a fighting chair and you are really going to use it hard, be sure the hardware under the chair seat is 'THRU-BOLTED'. There are too many stories of front gimbles as well as other parts including the mounting spindle being 'ripped' right off the seat bottom .....and that is a very scary scenario! Lives have been lost due to lack of safety in the cockpit.

Murray chairs have been copied over and over and it amazes us that the most important feature, the strongest point of the construction of our chairs has not been copied? The only answer could be the cost of building it. It takes more time and more man hours to build our seats and they are put through a vigorous QC program before delivered to our customers. The next time you are comparing chairs go right to the spindle under the chair and see how it is mounted to the seat. Also, see what type of metal the spindle is made with. You will be very surprised what you see.

Tip #2: 'Dissimilar Metals'.

Have you ever heard of 'Galvanic Corrosion'? Murray Products is the only fighting chair with all Stainless Steel Hardware. (Most others are a mix Chrome Brass, Aluminum and Stainless Steel in one chair.) That is why every new Murray Chair is sold with an 'extraordinary guarantee'

This is just touching a couple of subjects, there are many things to look for in a fighting chair and be sure to do your homework thoroughly before you make this decision. A fighting chair can be a very dangerous piece of equipment if not used properly and safety is an issue that seems to be forgotten throught our industry.
